Adding solar to your home has a lot of barriers. Maybe you don’t own your home. Maybe you own your home but can’t afford the upfront costs that might come with a solar project. To solve the latter, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association offers a Solar Group Buy option. Basically they select an installer through a competitive request for proposals process, form a committee of community stakeholders and offer free, public information sessions over a period of months. They educate and recruit as many people as possible in a given community and use the basic principle of economies of scale to lower the price of installing the panels for everyone involved. This gives home and business owners lower prices on their solar array while helping the community move toward achieving their sustainable goals. They have already facilitated 42 programs, reached 10,000 people and helped build over 1,900 arrays across the Midwest. Interested?
